Shown is a dry hydrant in Fairfield, VA. It is six inch diameter PVC approximately 20 feet long with strainer and two 90 degree elbows. In an attempt to conduct a performance test on Augusta County, VA Truck 106 (a 1500 GPM pump) the maximum amount of water obtainable with this dry hydrant was just in excess of 1000 GPM. If a greater volume is desired, consider the use of eight inch pipe and replace 90 degree elbows with 45 degree elbows when possible. The labor installing the hydrant is the same, and materials only slightly more expensive.
